Ooey Gooey Butter Layer Cake - Paula Deen

My sister made this recipe around Christmastime and she said it was delicious and everyone who ate it raved about it. I invited friends over for dinner and cake for one of their birthdays and asked what kind of cake he wanted. He requested anything but chocolate, so I decided to make this.
This looked like a time consuming recipe. I made the filling and frosting 2 days before making the cake, and made the cake the day before it was needed. In a nutshell, this cake, including the filling and frosting used 5 sticks of butter, 1 cup sour cream, 8-1/4 cups sugar, 2 packages of cream cheese, and 8 eggs. Wow! I was curious as to the calorie count, so calculated the calories using this link

Are you sitting down? The entire cake contains 13,392 calories! That's 837 calories per slice for 16 servings. The cake was very heavy and reminded me of a cross between pound cake and cheesecake. The filling had the most flavor, but the rest of the cake was quite bland and the frosting was way to sweet for my taste.

Not a winner of cake as far as I'm concerned. I've had better cakes (with a whole lot fewer calories)!  If you'd like to try the cake, or use the filling for one of your favorite cakes, you can find the recipe here.

  2. Wow! That's a lot of calories and a lot of butter.

Paula has been catching a lot of grief lately as she was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes three-years ago. She came out recently because she going to know profit from the drug maker who supplies her insulin.

  3. Oh what a disappointment. I'm always bummed when I make something (especially with a lot of butter) and it doesn't turn out to be fantastic.

The cake at least looks good!

  4. It's a great looking slice of cake, but boy the calories! Too bad it didn't impress after the time and effort it took for you to make it.
Karen, love that picture with all the sticks of butter! :)

  6. Well it sure looks pretty. :) I'm not a fan of a lot of cakes because I always think the frosting is too sweet and I'll even eat around it. Now give me a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting and I'm happy.

  7. Wow, that's some rich stuff there. I love me my butter, but I have to admit I think Ms Deen takes it a bit overboard sometimes. I know it's her shtick and all, but seriously. It does look lovely though and I'd definitely try it, don't get me wrong. Heh.

  12. Shocking calorie count even though I knew how much butter and stuff you used. I've never seen a gooey butter cake that looked like that. I lived in the St. Louis area where it originated from and it's totally different. I encourage you to find another recipe and try the real deal (which is probably almost as bad calorie wise). Here's a link to Smitten Kitchen who always has great recipes http://smittenkitchen.com/2010/03/st-louis-gooey-butter-cake/ And let me know if you make it, it's worth a trip.

  13. I hate it when I use that many good ingredients and the recipe turns out not so good. Once in a while to eat something with that many calories is OK. But it HAS to taste worth the calories! I think in this case for Paula- less is more. She better start listening or she will have a very painful last few years of her life.

  19. Oh dear, that's just wrong!. No slice of cake should have that many calories. For that many it should be the best dessert you ever ate.
